Spring into Canberra > Gourmet delights
Canberra is a great destination for food lovers, with a huge range of gastronomic experiences available. The Gourmet guide — Canberra and the region, shares the very best in gourmet experiences on offer as well as details of local producers, providores, cooking schools and some recipes from leading restaurants. To obtain your free copy of the Gourmet guide, call the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre on 1300 554 114 or download it here. In the meantime, here’s just a taste of what’s on offer …
Head out to the quaint town of Gundaroo to the old Royal Hotel and enjoy a long, lazy lunch or dinner at Grazing, which recently won the Australian Tourism Award for restaurants and catering. Grab a table by one of the five open fireplaces and dine on chef Tom Moore’s bold and innovative flavours that have an emphasis on seasonal and organic local produce.
Canberra’s new dining spot, in the NewActon Pavilion, features a seasonal Modern Australian menu that showcases products from its wood-fired oven and grill. Flint is set in a 1927 heritage building that has been dramatically transformed to become a colourful, contemporary space with two outdoor terrace areas. Flint can also host private events.
Views to dine for at OnredIf you’re after fine food with fantastic views, head to newcomer Onred, which has quickly emerged as one of the city’s leading restaurants. Located on the summit of Red Hill, Onred offers one of the finest views in Canberra, superb food by chef Jodie Johnson, and attentive service.
Canberra’s newest wine bar, the Parlour Wine Room, also offers tapas on its menu, in a lavish atmosphere reminiscent of a Victorian 1930s cigar lounge. Desserts are a special feature, and there are around 150 wines on the list alongside some classic cocktails.
For more cocktail magic, head to Julep Lounge in Manuka, with more than 60 cocktails, many of them from classic recipes, others from their own innovative creations by multi award-winning bartender David Nguyen-Luu. Enjoy Julep’s French salon style, with lounges, wing chairs and chandeliers, as well as cocktail workshops, regular live jazz evenings and resident DJs.
Lanterne Rooms now openThe very cool Lanterne Rooms, at the Campbell shops, is the latest venture for Chris Hansen and Josiah Li, who are behind the Chairman & Yip in Civic and Cape Cod at Deakin. Vietnamese-style lanterns and louvred doors create four semi-private rooms. French-trained Malaysian chef Jeffrey Shim presents mostly European-style dishes with Asian influences. Bookings are recommended.
